Things to Do/Visit:

  • Historic Dockyard:
Portsmouth’s historic dockyard is home to three world famous ships: The Mary Rose, Henry VIII's favourite warship, sank in 1545 but in a monumental feat was raised from the sea in 1982. It is the only surviving 16th century warship on display today. The HMS Victory was Lord Nelson’s famous warship, commanded by him in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 to defeat the combined forces of the French and Spanish fleets. It was on this ship that he famously uttered the words “Kiss me, Hardy…” shortly before dying of a gunshot wound to the lung and spine. The latest addition to the historic dockyard is the HMS Warrior 1860, which was the world’s first iron clad battleship and one of the largest, fastest and most innovative warships of the Victorian age.
  • Charles Dickens’ Birth Place:
The famous writer; Charles Dickens, was born in a modest house in Portsmouth in 1812. The house has miraculously survived and is now preserved as a museum, furnished in the style of 1809 which is when John and Elizabeth Dickens set up the first home of their married life.
  • Gunwharf Quays and Spinnaker Tower:
